SMOK Devilkin 225W Vape Starter Kit Review

The SMOK Devilkin 225W Vape Starter Kit is a DL (direct lung inhale) box mod from SMOK. It has an ergonomic design making it fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. If you are looking to replace Hookah/Shisha or looking for a powerful device to produce big clouds, then this device might be an option, but not the best option.

Design and Material:

The Devilkin comes in an ergonomic design, which means it fits nicely in the palm of your hand. It definitely feels less chunky than a lot of box mods. The screen doesn’t have a tinted protector which makes it nice and bright but leaves it in danger of scratches. The Devilkin was available in six colors only, all using a black base, but later new colors have been introduced.

Size and Weight:

The mod itself is just slightly larger than average. It can fit into a normal sized pocket but will cause a bit of a bulge. This is a pretty heavy device and if you want to carry it in the pocket of your jeans, make sure you have a good belt. The weight of the mod and tank without the e-liquid is around 237gm, so it is not a light device.

The tank is very large, fitting 8ml, and its side-mounted design makes it a little lop-sided. In my opinion, larger tanks work better fitted centrally.

Battery, Power, and Charging:

The Devilkin requires dual 18650 rechargeable batteries which are not included, so the battery-life really depends on how you’re willing to fork out buying the batteries. The kit comes with a USB charging cable and features a front-facing charging port. It’s always worth being a little careful when charging removable batteries in the device as it can damage the life of the battery. I strongly recommend that you use an external charger for the batteries to avoid damages to the mod or batteries. The mod can produce power output up to 225W, and has variable wattage/temprature control ability.

Tank:

The Devilkin comes with an 8ml stainless steel DL tank as standard which really is plenty, even for most avid cloud chaser. It comes with a Cobra Drip Tip, and has a patented locking mechanism, which I found difficult to use. The TFV12 Prince Tank is a good all-round sub-ohm that works for both daily use and cloud sessions. The drip-tip is changeable pretty big and non-changeable, which I found to be irritating. I’m used to a smaller tip so it just didn’t feel right. The tank is refillable from the top which is good.

Coil:

The Devilkin comes with a V12 Prince-Q4 0.4ohm quadruple coil pre-installed. This is a really high-quality coil for some good, dense flavours and really big vapour clouds (if that’s what you’re into). It comes with spare V12 Prince-T10 0.12ohm decuple coils which are also great coils for flavour. The Devilkin has a power output of up to 225W, which is incredibly powerful.

Airflow System:

Much like most large mods, the Devilkin has a slide airflow system on the bottom of the tank. For a mod this size, the amount of air it allows in is quite small. The slide can be stiff and, if you’ve been using it for a while, also quite hot, so be careful.

Usability and Coil Installation:

The overall usability for the Devilkin is OK. The fire button is nice and big and has a satisfying click. The front buttons are all responsive. The menu system is, for me, overly confusing. Changing the power output is not intuitive and I had to refer to the user manual several times.

Changing the coil is simple enough, much the same as any other mod. Unscrewing the tank is difficult the first couple of times but once you wear it in, it’s fine.

Insulation:

Not good. It gets hot and it gets hot quickly. Changing the airflow after vaping for a while is not the best idea as the whole area gets quite hot. It’s also annoying putting a hot vape back into your pocket.

Software:

Again, not my favourite. The Devilkin comes with 1.3 Inch TGT HD Screen, but I found the menu system pretty complicated and the software overall to be lacking. It doesn’t automatically adjust the power when you change like the Vaporesso Revenger X does, for example. The display tells you just about everything you need to know. It even has separate displays for each battery, which I thought was a nice touch. Also you can change the colors of screen indicators.

Here are some tips to use the mod software:

X5 clicks of the fire bar to turn on and off
Whilst on x3 clicks of fire bar to enter menu
Use fire bar to scroll through options
Use left and right buttons to scroll through sub menus
X3 clicks in menu mode takes you to On/Off option hit fire bar once to return to main screen

Various up + down buttons and fire bar combos including:

Up + Down locks device [x5 fast clicks to unlock]
Fire + down selects modes
Fire + up to select ramp up: norm/soft/hard
In memory mode press up and down to adjust wattage/temp.

Price:

This isn’t cheap, however it is a complicated mod that comes with a lot of stuff. It’s got a good tank and a couple of decent coils. The batteries aren’t included and rechargeable 18650 batteries can run you a fair bit of cash. I don’t think the Devilkin is one of the best mods for this price-range.
